Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Associate Registered Nutritionist (ANutr)?
An ANutr is a credentialled nutrition professional recognised by the Nutrition Society of New Zealand, meeting defined standards of education, competence, and professional ethics. ANutr practitioners provide evidence-informed nutrition education and dietary guidance within a defined scope — distinct from a Registered Dietitian, who manages clinical nutritional conditions in medical settings.
Can you support me if I have a diagnosed health condition?
In many cases, yes — nutrition education can meaningfully complement your existing medical care. However, the clinical management of conditions such as Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, eating disorders, renal disease, or complex gastrointestinal conditions falls outside the ANutr scope of practice. You will always be clearly informed if your situation requires referral to a Registered Dietitian, GP, or other health professional.
Are sessions available online or in person only?
All consultations are available via secure video call, making support accessible throughout New Zealand and internationally. In-person appointments are available in Christchurch. Both formats offer the same quality of care, personalisation, and follow-up.
Will my cultural food preferences be respected?
Absolutely — and this is a genuine priority at NM Nutrition. Meal frameworks can be built around dhal, dahi, khichdi, roti, sabzi, and other familiar staples, so that evidence-based nutrition feels culturally relevant and personally meaningful rather than prescriptive or alienating.
Will you recommend supplements?
The focus is always food-first. Supplement discussion may be included where there is a clear evidence base and nutritional rationale, but supplements are never the primary recommendation. Prescribing supplements, ordering blood tests, or making clinical supplement prescriptions are outside the nutritionist scope of practice.
How do I decide which service is right for me?
If you’re uncertain, the Initial Consultation is the ideal starting point. It provides space for a thorough dietary and lifestyle assessment, after which the most appropriate next steps — whether a structured programme, further consultations, or referral — can be discussed together based on your individual goals and circumstances.
What does WhatsApp support include?
WhatsApp support (available within the Metabolic Health Regain and Sustainable Fat Loss programmes) allows brief check-ins, quick questions, and food diary sharing between formal sessions. It provides an additional layer of accountability and continuity — responses are typically provided within one to two business days, and it complements rather than replaces consultations.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is required — you can book directly. If you have a diagnosed condition, bringing recent test results or clinical correspondence to your initial consultation helps ensure the guidance provided is as informed, relevant, and safe as possible.
